Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia has expanded its maritime connectivity with the launch of a new container shipping service connecting India, Jeddah and Djibouti, further reinforcing the Kingdom’s ambition to become a leading global logistics hub under Vision 2030.
The new service, introduced through Jeddah Islamic Port, establishes a direct maritime link between India’s Mundra Port, Saudi Arabia’s western gateway at Jeddah, and the Port of Djibouti, a key logistics hub serving East Africa. The route is expected to facilitate faster cargo movement and improve supply chain efficiency between Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

The service provides importers and exporters with enhanced access to some of the world’s fastest-growing trade corridors, supporting the movement of a wide range of commodities including consumer goods, industrial equipment, automotive components, construction materials and food products.
Industry observers view the new route as a strategic step toward strengthening trade ties between Saudi Arabia and India, one of the Kingdom’s largest trading partners. The improved connectivity is also expected to create new opportunities for businesses seeking access to East African markets through Djibouti’s well-established logistics infrastructure.
Located at the southern entrance of the Red Sea, Djibouti serves as a vital maritime gateway for regional markets including Ethiopia, Somalia and other East African economies. By linking Jeddah directly with both India and Djibouti, the new service is expected to streamline cargo flows while offering shipping lines and freight forwarders additional routing options.
The development comes as Saudi Arabia continues to invest heavily in port infrastructure, logistics services and multimodal transportation networks as part of its Vision 2030 strategy. The Kingdom aims to position itself as a central logistics platform connecting Asia, Europe and Africa while increasing the competitiveness of its ports and supply chain ecosystem.
For the wider GCC logistics sector, the new maritime service could contribute to reduced transit times, improved cargo reliability and greater resilience across regional supply chains. It also reflects the growing importance of Red Sea trade corridors amid increasing demand for diversified shipping routes and enhanced regional connectivity.
As trade volumes between South Asia, the Gulf and East Africa continue to rise, the launch of the India–Jeddah–Djibouti service marks another significant milestone in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to strengthen its role in global commerce and maritime logistics.
Editor’s Note: The new service is expected to support Saudi Arabia’s long-term objective of becoming one of the world’s leading logistics hubs while creating new opportunities for shipping lines, freight forwarders, importers and exporters operating across the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
